What if you could assemble one simple game that would teach your preschooler letter and number recognition, colors, shapes, counting, textures and more? What if that one simple game also could provide sensory input and strengthen motor skills? Sound too good to be true? Yeah, you're right. It probably is. You should just go back to those boring workbooks.

Is there anything more rewarding than igniting a love of reading in your child? As homeschooling mamas, it is truly one of our most important jobs. It begins with our sweet infants nestled on our laps as we sing to them or chant silly rhymes. Then comes board books and pictures books as we read favorite stories over and over to our toddlers. Next we move to chapter books as we cuddle on the couch enjoying Little House on the Prairie and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Finally, we reach the stage where we can discuss great literature and ideas with our teens and we realized it happened. We succeeded in raising readers in a today's electronic media saturated world.

Fall is just beginning to come to the beautiful rolling farmland of Ohio. The last few days the air has begun to turn crisp, the nights are cool, and soon the trees will turn the most fantastic hues. I never tire of it.

For our family, fall also means apples!  Many years ago, we started making apple cider, which as become a much-cherished tradition. We all look forward to apple cider time!

4 Free Printables to Teach Your Homeschooler to Work Independently

As busy homeschooling mothers of many children, Rachel and I have found that having a simple system in place to help our children work independently is a MUST! I once heard someone say that one of our chief responsibilities as mothers is to "work ourselves out of a job" and I couldn't agree more. From the moment our children are tottering around on chubby little legs, we should be training them to be helpers and workers. By the time our children are young teens, they ought to be able to take over lawn care, meal preparation and many other household tasks completely independent from Dad and Mom. Sound like a dream come true?

During my 10+ years of homeschooling, I have tried many different styles of history lap books, unit studies and timelines, most of which were abandoned at some point in the course of each school year because they were just too much. Too much cutting. Too much gluing. Too much journaling. Too much trying to make sure the timeline figure was matched exactly with the timeline date and getting frustrated when our history book date didn't match the date on our timeline. Too much everything! We like to keep things simple here. Simple for busy mamas and simple for the kiddos.

Spelling is one of those things that, for me, often has fallen into the category of How much? How often? What do I really need to teach here? There are some children who, simply from reading a lot of good literature, seem to intuitively  learn and apply the rules of good spelling.

And then there are the ones who don't.

If your child falls into this latter category, here are 33+ fabulous and free resources for improving his or her spelling.

Both of us Sisters LOVE American History! It probably comes from our parents. We can both still remember the many, many history museums, famous battlefields, and monuments that we visited on summer vacations.

Disneyland? What's that?
