This is the easiest, most convenient way I have found to consistently add memory work to our homeschool routine!
So, why memorize?
What do we memorize?
I knew we should memorizing....but what do we memorize? There were two things that always seemed to hold me back when it came to consistently including memory work in our homeschool:
It's tedious to search for selections to memorize.
And (don't laugh!) I kept forgetting to do memory work! (How ironic is that?!?)
Then I stumbled on Pam Barnhill's posts on memory work at Homeschool Solutions. (Her 100 Things for Kids to Memorize is a great place to start for ideas!) Now I had lots of ideas for memorization, but no way to organize it so that we would actually do it.
Which is where the humble restaurant menu holders come in. (Full disclosure: I know I saw this idea on a website somewhere but I can't find where! If you know, shoot me an email so I can give credit where credit is due on this one.)
And so, the inspiration for these Memory Menu packs. I put together selections of classic literature, poetry, speeches, scripture and more formatted to print and slide into a clear restaurant menu holder and themed for the holidays. The menu holders provide the organization I desperately needed and keep the selections from getting smeared, wrinkled or lost.
Once your child has memorized the selections in the menu holder, they can easily be slid out and replaced with new ones. I like the clear menu holders with 8 slots. However, if that much memory work is daunting to you, there are menu holders that hold 1 and 2 sheets. (Just make sure they are sized for an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.)
This Holiday Memory Menu pack has selections of Fall- and Christmas-themed poems, speeches, hymns, scripture, classic literature excerpts and character statements for your child to memorize.
